Has anything ever happened in your life that knocked the wind out of you? Something happened that made you feel like you were in a dream, but you knew it was true? Or you received a knock at the door late one night that changed your life forever?

One day I read Psalm 66:8 and thought, “I’m going to retire from the ‘blessing’ business. Yeah, it doesn’t appear to be my strength. I think I’ll just get in the ‘Are you sure that needs to happen’ business.” One thing was certain, I felt pushed to the limit.

"Bless our God, O peoples! Give him a thunderous welcome! Didn’t he set us on the road to life? Didn’t he keep us out of the ditch? He trained us first, passed us like silver through refining fires, Brought us into hardscrabble country, pushed us to our very limit, Road-tested us inside and out, took us to hell and back; Finally he brought us to this well-watered place.” Psalm 66:8-12The Message (MSG)

I do realize, however, sometimes it’s hard to bless Him when we’re going through a struggle. It’s hard to imagine that He’s still with us during that time. I went through a season of heavy grief after my sister passed away, and I didn’t feel like God was with me. I felt the overwhelming burden of grief and sorrow. If He was there, it seemed like He was playing hide and seek with me; it seemed as if He was the best hider ever!

Logically, I know we don’t live forever. However, somewhere in my mind, I imagined that my sister and I would have many more years together. Who thinks about the possibility of her sister not being the maid of honor on her wedding day, or not seeing her son graduate from high school? Most people imagine the future, and it always includes those you love.

When I look back, I can see how God was with me during the most difficult time in my life. In fact, most days I was able to get up out of my bed because He gave me strength. He placed people in my life to encourage me. He would send me a sweet reminder through His word at just the right time, or allow me to connect with people who had gone through the same situation. It’s because He is always with me.

When we are afflicted, He is with us. When our hearts are heavy with grief, He is with us. When we’re struggling and don’t see how it’s going to turn around, He is with us. When a friend ends the relationship, He is with us. We may not see it at the time, but He’s always with us.

The Lord can heal our broken hearts. He can take us from feeling like we’re in the wilderness to being grateful in the midst of our sorrows. He can take your deepest pain and allow it to encourage other people. We may not be able to control what happens to us in life, but we can control what we do with it.

On January 11, 2014, I experienced one of the most painful moments in my life. Today God is using that pain to remind someone else there is hope! My prayer for us this week is that we remember there is hope for any situation we face. There is healing for our pain and comfort for our sorrows. There is nothing too small or too big that God cannot handle. I’m in your corner and most importantly, God is in your corner. He thinks you are worth it!
